Continuous Core

The inside of a bevel-cut mat is called the core, and it plays a much bigger role in custom framing than many people realize. When a mat is cut at a 45-degree angle, that angled edge reveals the interior material, the core, creating a subtle but highly visible border around the artwork. This thin line of color can dramatically influence the overall presentation.

A continuous core mat means that the color runs consistently throughout the entire thickness of the board. In other words, the surface paper and the interior core are the same color. When the bevel is cut, the revealed edge blends seamlessly with the face of the mat, creating a clean, uniform look. This is often preferred for:

  • Minimalist or contemporary designs, where subtlety and cohesion are key
  • High-end custom framing, where refined detail matters
  • Photography or modern artwork, where distractions should be minimized
