Choosing Mat Boards for Standard and Radius Frames

Standard-Rabbet_diagram-(2).jpg

Every picture frame has a rabbet depth (R measurement). This measures the inner channel of the frame that holds the art and framing materials including backing boards, mat boards and acrylic glazing.

Our Standard and Radius Metal Frame Collections have a rabbet depth of 3/8”. An art stack consisting of a 4-ply mat board, acrylic and foam core is 9/32”, leaving only 3/32”  for your artwork and the spring clip that secures everything. For this reason, 6 or 8 ply and multiple mat boards will not fit into the Standard or Radius frames.

Any of our 4-ply mat boards will work with these frames and are offered in an array of colors and textures, and in both general-purpose and conservation.

If you prefer to use multiple or thicker mat boards and want a flat top metal frame, we recommend the Standard Plus or Standard Plus Three Collections. If you would like a round top frame we recommend the Radius Colorcast Collection.

We suggest ordering a sample of the frame you wish to use before submitting your final order. Have questions? Ask our in-house framing experts.
