Measuring Artwork for Framing

I’m into Monet. Not Math.

Don’t fret, measuring your artwork for framing is not as daunting as it may seem, just remember the old adage, “measure twice, cut once.”

To ensure a proper fit, measure the exact dimensions of your artwork or the area that you want shown through the window of the mat to 1/16 of an inch. Take note: many times, the first inch of a measuring tape is not a true full inch. If you do plan to use a tape, be sure to subtract the first inch.

But what if my image has a border? That’s okay; still measure the portion that you actually want to show through the mat board window opening. If you plan to sign or number your artwork, a white border (also known as a relief) is necessary.

However, if the artwork is already matted, measure the outside dimensions of the mat.

Once you have measured the area that you want to frame, our website makes the process simple. On our site, enter your measurements by art size and we will take care of the math!
