Volume and Commercial Framing: An Interview with Jennifer Teachout

Read our interview with Jennifer Teachout, Production Manager on volume and commercial framing. Get answers to common questions about our commercial framing services.

1.  What does volume framing mean?

Volume framing’ refers to an order for a larger quantity of prints and frames. The order could be for as few as 25 pieces, or thousands. It could be an order to frame a number of different prints, or frame multiples of the same print.  Often volume framing orders are made by businesses.  They may be selling a print through a catalogue or decorating several offices or restaurants.  My department also handles lower-volume orders from our showroom and website.

2. What are the different services that you offer?

We offer  professional digital printing of art, photo printing, and specialty assembly services, including dry-mounting or hinging for conservation framing and floating artwork.  Of course we also do straightforward framing with simple mats.  Part of our role is to package and ship.  We custom pack each order and we can either ship in bulk to a single location or drop ship straight to our customers’ customers.

3.  How long has American Frame been doing volume/commercial framing?

We’ve been doing volume framing for about 20 years. Our first project was framing for Sprint’s Total Quality program.  We framed several hundred posters for distribution to their sales offices nationwide. Our business took off from there.

4. What is the largest order you’ve framed in terms of volume?

The largest order we’ve ever framed was for Signal’s catalog, a little photograph called ‘The Mad Bluebird’. We must have done 30,000+ pieces over the course of about 5 years!

5.  What’s the most unusual thing you’ve ever framed?

We’ve seen a lot over the years. We’ve framed shirts, flags, coins, large African kuba cloths, silk scarves, and pieces of a gym floor!

6. If a customer already has artwork in hand, will you frame it even though you didn’t print it?

Yes!

7. How do customers get artwork to you?

They have to send it to us. We are happy to provide guidance for packaging and shipping.  If they are close to our offices in Maumee, Ohio, they can bring it in as well.

8. How long does it typically take to complete a large framing order?

It depends on what you’re having done. If you need mats cut, items dry mounted, and wood frames, it takes a little bit longer, but usually it takes about 3 weeks from start to finish. Volume customers who do ongoing drop ship programs in which we regularly frame a few pieces a day can expect 2-3 day service.
