Metal Frames: Versatility of Metal in Décor

The key to designing a well balanced room is to mix materials; wood, metal, stone, and fabrics. The easiest way to add details of metal are the frames around your artwork.

In this traditional room full of decorative details such as nail head trim, button tufting and the fluted legs of the Louis XVI chair, these metal frames create some much needed geometry and linear lines in the room. They help your eye relax and allow the art to shine with the sophisticated simplicity of metal frames. If this art was treated in a more traditional ‘ornate’ wood frame it would compete with the other carefully chosen details of the room and visually overwhelm your senses.

The metal frames on this gallery wall mimic the linear shape of the windows and help to provide the sharp, crisp lines that add interest to this area. The warm tones of the silvery frames permit the artwork to be the star of this otherwise simple room, without being cold.

In this light, bright and airy room the dark metal frames help to break up the wall space and visually grounds the artwork so that it can be a highlight in the room. The contrast commands your attention and leads your eye to the art grouping. The straightforwardness of the frames allows the detail of the chandelier and pattern of the chair fabric to stand out.

The light frame and mat treatment on the light walls make this artwork ‘float’ in the room. The framing treatment allows the contrast of the black and white photos to grab your interest while giving your eye a break so you can focus on the photograph.

So, what do you think? Do you agree with the selections or would you prefer to see a different style of frame in any of these settings?

I agree with the sections. I really enjoyed the floating black and white photos. I had no idea framing could be so versatile!
