Is It Professional ‘Photo’ or ‘Photography’ Printing?

As a blogger, I am always looking for the most accurate, descriptive words to describe what we do so that we can be found online for customers who might need our services. So it’s interesting to me when terms as simple and what I feel should be almost interchangeable cause a debate among our marketing team.

So when you hear the phrase ‘professional photo printing’, does it cause you to picture a professional (as in a professional printer) printing photos (as in snapshots)?  Digging even deeper, does the word professional in this context cause you to picture a person or a piece of equipment or even both? If you were to print an IPhone shot do you call it a ‘photo’ or would you refer to it as ‘photography’?  Is there a difference to you?

This is more complicated than we ever realized right?!

Traditionally, I have referred to our services as ‘professional photography printing’, as most of the images that we handle tend to be larger in scale, captured with quality equipment and finished by trained photographers either as an art piece or as important documentation of an event. And as I write that I need to say that I don’t think the two are mutually exclusive. A ‘photo’ can also be small in scale, created by a professional and finished into something memorable and worthy of display.

So what do you think (or do you really not care)?

It's all about how you view it (or yourself), I guess! Thanks for weighing in.

I am just a bit reluctant to call what I do with my point and shoot Photography. More out of respect for so many professional photographers. I guess if I preface with "amateur" it wouldn't be so bad.

I think "photo" is the shortening of "photograph". The word "photography" is the action of photographing. One is a noun and one is an action.
