Framed art looks better and lasts longer, and one of the keys to a successful framing job is securing your art to a mat or mounting board. But not all methods and materials are created equal.
Original art on paper requires reversible and delicate materials, such as archival tapes and mounting strips. Mounting strips are adhered to the foam core backer board and overlap the artwork in several spots without adhesion. Paper and linen tapes adhere to the back of the mat and the artwork, acting as a hinge between the two. Always choose a tape weaker than the art’s paper, so the tape, not the art, will tear if pulled.
For photographs and prints many framers prefer to adhere the entire piece to a mounting board, either through a reversible, archival process such as dry mounting with Art-Care Restore or through a do-it-yourself irreversible method, such as a self-adhesive mounting board.
When you want to float artwork on top of a mat, use transfer tape, which is double-sided. Transfer tape is also good for installing dust covers and adhering inexpensive prints to a non-adhesive mounting board. Shop all of our Framing Tools & Supplies.
