June 2009 - Framing Records and CDs

Framing Records and CDs

Thinking about framing your old album collection? Try out our custom designed kits precision cut for your favorite 33s, 78s, 45s or even CDs. We’ve done all the measuring so you can easily and economically create an artful music display.

Each kit contains a classic solid wood frame in walnut or black or a Nielsen metal frame in matte black or graphite, three high-quality custom cut mats, mounting board and museum-grade acrylic glazing. No adhesives are used to secure your records or CDs. Items are secured by using our specially designed mat board openings. Handcrafted in the USA.

For this project we used our 33DS10 33LP Deluxe-Graphite Metal Frame kit.

Lets Get Started

Step 1- Insert your album.
Simply place your album cover into the square opening on the left side of the black bottom mat, then slide a portion of your LP into the cover sleeve and into the appropriate round-sided opening.

Step 2 - Personalize your project.
Print a ‘name plate’ for your project. Often you will see the album title, artist, and release date. Position your typed name plate in the cut window at the bottom of your mat. Once it is centered, hinge it to the back of the top mat. Place the top mats onto the bottom mat. Here you will see that the special cut in the top mat is what holds your album and cover in place without adhesives.

Step 3 - Preparing the Glazing (acrylic).
Peel the protective paper off one side of your acrylic. Place the exposed side of the acrylic face down on your mats. Peel the paper off the remaining side.

Step 4 - Assemble the Frame
Begin by selecting three frame sections – one shorter section and the two long pieces. Set the front of the frame face down on your work surface. Place two angled plates (one with screws, one without) together into the hardware track at each end of the frame section. The screw heads should face outward. Fasten the plates by gently tightening the screws in the hardware track. Note: Do not fully tighten any screws until frame is completed.

Step 5 - Insert the materials
Slide in all the materials to be framed – your glazing, mats with the album and cover and mounting board – into the channel of the open frame side. Insert corner plates into each end of the remaining frame section. Attach the final frame section and align and tighten as in Step 4.

Step 6 - Finishing touches
Readjust the corners as necessary and tighten all screws firmly. Secure your artwork by flexing and inserting the spring clips with a Springmate or your screwdriver between the frame edge and the backing board. Position hangers into the hardware track at each side of the frame. Hanger is positioned correctly if the backing board is visible through its hole and both hangers are parallel to each other. Tighten the screws. Loop wire between the hangers, twisting it at the ends. Attach wall protectors to the bottom corners of the frame where the frame contacts the wall.

That’s it! Now kick back and admire your work as you remember the lyrics to your favorite tunes.
