E-Tip: Framing Tips- Capturing a professional-quality image of your artwork

Capturing a digital image of your original artwork opens many opportunities for promotions and sales.  You can “hang” your art in American Frame’s online Art Gallery for private archiving, sell your work to the public as giclee prints direct from our website, order prints for yourself (framed or not) to sell at art shows, and insert images of your work in promotional materials, such as brochures and portfolios.

The keys to capturing a professional-quality image of an original work are lighting, technique and equipment.  An S.L.R. camera (not a point-and-shoot) and a well-lit space without shadows or glare are crucial.  Don’t use a flash; it will distort the image.  Use the lowest I.S.O and slowest shutter speed your camera offers with a flat-eye lens or close-up lens, never a zoom. Using a remote shutter release or timer can help you avoid blur in your image from camera shake. Make sure the camera is on a level tripod with the lens centered precisely on the picture and that the art is perfectly plumb.

If you aren’t an experienced photographer, consider having a professional capture your image.  If you happen to be near our showroom in Maumee, Ohio, take advantage of
American Frame’s in-house photography department.  We use the Greytag MacBeth color standard to provide a file virtually 100% color correct, and when you photograph with us we guarantee the results..
