Discover How to Photograph Your Artwork for Reproductions
It’s important for artists to have high-quality photographs of their artwork – for insurance purposes, promotional materials, exhibitions and especially for fine art prints. Photographing your artwork requires a quality SLR (single lens reflex) camera with a lens that can shoot at 50-55 mm, good lighting and proper camera positioning to avoid glare and “hot spots” on the image.
We’ve produced an informative how-to video for expertly photographing your original artwork for fine art prints and resale. We’ve also compiled a checklist for you to keep on hand –
1. Make sure your environment is light correct. Check the white balance by using a grey card. When this neutral color matches the camera settings the other colors will be correct as well.
2. Never use a flash or zoom. They will distort the orientation and perspective of the image. Use the slowest shutter speed and even lighting for the most realistic reproduction of your image.
3. Simulate the controlled environment used by professional photographers by setting up in a dark area like your basement or garage.
4. Use a good-quality single lens reflex camera (SLR). Position your camera straight-on using a secure tripod set on a strong, flat surface. A flat eye or close-up lens is best.

Neil Frankenhauser, our featured artist, has benefitted from our professional photographers’ services. Neil is an award-winning artist and instructor. He has more than 40 years experience teaching on the elementary, college and continuing education levels including Monroe Community College, The Toledo Museum of Art, University of Akron and The University of Toledo.
Neil is currently working with oil pastels but has worked in many other mediums including watercolors, acrylics, oils and mixed media. Weather permitting he enjoys working en plein air. During the winter months he’s in his studio working on experimental techniques.
